Curly Fries Hosta
Curly Fries Hosta sounds like something you’d order as a side with your next burger. I don’t know how they’d be as a side dish but they are definitely one for the garden.
You can see where the fries part comes from in the name, and the curly part is very obvious. Curly Fries came about as a rare chance seedling of Pineapple Upsidedown Cake Hosta.
That chance seedling was grown and registered by well-known hosta breeder Bob Solberg. He has introduced us to several other great hostas in the past. Guacamole and Orange Marmalade PP16,742 are just a couple of them.
Different than most
This hosta really doesn’t resemble what lots of folks think of as a hosta. Hostas are green or they’re green and white, right?? Most are but some aren’t.
Most hostas don’t have long, twisty curly leaves. Curly Fries has ’em and also has similar coloration to its parent plant. Very long light greenish yellow leaves sometimes with a very slight edge of darker green showing.
Once the clump gets some good size, the leaves resemble a bowl of twisty curly fries. All that’s missing is some ketchup.
This is a picture of my grouping of Curly Fries in one of my hosta beds. I have them front and center. Out of the 50 or so different hostas growing in this bed, these seem to draw the most attention.
They should be somewhere up front so they can be seen and enjoyed since they are a small-sized hosta. Only growing to about 8-12 inches tall and will grow out to around 15-18 inches wide.
Their flowers are a light lavender and grow on purplish stalks. These stalks will grow about twice as tall as the plant. You’ll have to wait until late summer to enjoy them.
