Coral Bells
Coral Bells
Coral Bells come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Beautiful plants for the shade. Most of the colorful ones are protected with a patent and can’t be propagated. We do try to carry some of the unpatented varieties.
Coral Bells (Heuchera), also known as Alumroot, are a native genus to America. That means that the Heucheras are from the Americas and have not been imported from a foreign country like so many of our plants and trees.
They have been cross-bred and hybridized to create some of the most colorful and popular varieties. There are several varieties that are not covered by a patent and are free to propagate.
These plants prefer to grow in at least half shade. They are an evergreen perennial, meaning that they don’t lose their leaves for winter. The leaves get a little ragged and worn during the winter months and they may need some sprucing up in the spring.
Coral Bells, leaves or flowers…
The flowers are usually not the important feature, but some varieties do put up some bright red flowers that stand out and do attract the occasional hummingbird.
The leaves are the prominent feature. Large ruffled edges, different color veining, and different colored bottoms are what make these clumping plants so much in demand.
Usually a clump of foliage about 10″ to 12″ up to about 18″ with small flower stalks adding another 12“ from late spring through the summer months with some deadheading. Keep the plants looking their best by removing worn or dead leaves.
