Perennial Flowers
Perennial flowers are becoming more popular as people realize they can spend their money once and enjoy beautiful flowers year after year. They come back again next year.
Perennial flowers are plants that return each year with a little more size and better flowers. The plant that you see above ground will die back usually after a hard freeze in the late fall.
The root system that supplies all the nutrients lives on and sends up new growth in the spring. The roots actually multiply so there are more plants that grow.
Some types of flowers need to be divided every few years. The original root section has died and it leaves a void, usually in the center of the plant.
Flowering may not seem to last as long as annual flowers. Blooming can sometimes be extended or repeated by deadheading to prevent the flower from going to seed.
Perennial flowers usually have better plant foliage so they are still a welcome addition to a flower bed even though they are not blooming. There are many, many varieties of perennial flowers and we only sell a small selection of what is available.

Cardinal Flower (Native)
Lobelia cardinalis
2′ to 4′ high and 1′ to 2′ wide.
Full sun/part shade
Bright red flowers, favorite among hummingbirds. Grows well in wet soil.
Purple Coneflower (Native)
Echinacea purpurea
2′ to 4′ high and 1′ to 2′ wide.
Full sun/part shade
Light purple petals with dark orange-tipped spiny center. Let the flowers go to seed for finches.
Spiderworts (Native)
Tradescantia virginiana
18″ to 24″ high and 1′ to 3′ wide.
Full sun/part shade
Purple 3 petaled flowers with grass-like foliage.
Sweet Kate Spiderworts
Tradescantia x andersoniana ‘Sweet Kate’
9″ to 12″ high and 9″ to 12″ wide.
Full sun/partial shade
Yellowish strap-like foliage topped with clear purple blooms. More sun makes a better yellow color. Blooms only last a day and close in the early afternoon. Many buds create a long bloom period.
Snowcap Spiderworts
Tradescantia andersoniana ‘Snow Cap’
15″ to 20″ high and 12″ to 24″ wide.
Full sun/partial shade
Strap-like foliage topped with white blooms. Blooms only last for a day and close in the early afternoon. Many buds create a long bloom period.
Concord Grape Spiderworts
Tradescantia ‘Concord Grape’
15″ to 18″ high and 18″ to 24″ wide.

Turtleheads (Native)
Chelone obliqua
2′ to 3′ high and 1′ to 2′ wide.
Full sun/part shade
Upright plant with lots of pink blooms that look like a turtle with its head sticking out. Likes wet areas, even bogs.
Autumn Sun Coneflower
Rudbeckia nitida ‘Herbstonne’
5′ to 6′ high and 3′ to 4′ wide.
Full sun
Upright plant with lots of large yellow coneflower blooms. Also known as cutleaf because of the large fingered leaves.
Black-Eyed Susan (Native)
Rudbeckia fulgida sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’
18″ to 24″ high and 2′ to 3′ wide.
Full sun/part shade
Upright plant with lots of large yellow daisy-like blooms with brown center cone. Blooms from midsummer until frost.
Balloon Flower
Platycodon grandiflorus ‘Sentimental Blue’
18″ to 24″ high and 8″ to 12″ wide.
Full sun/part shade
Flower buds appear to inflate larger and larger, then burst open to a blue, 5 petaled flowers.
Bleeding Hearts
Dicentra spectabilis
2 to 3 feet high and 3 to 4 feet wide.
Partial to full shade. Loads of light pink heart-shaped flowers on wiry stems in early Spring. Blue-green foliage lasts long into summer until it gets too dry and goes away until next year.
Husker Red Beard Tongue
Penstemon digitalis ‘Husker Red’
2′ to 3′ high and 1′ to 2′ wide.
Full sun
Long purplish-green leaves grow on purple stems. Stalks of multiple white tubular flowers bloom on purple stems in summer.
