Lilacs
Lilacs bloom in mid-spring but the fragrance is so strong that they can be enjoyed from quite a distance. They make great cut flowers as well. Lilacs produce next year’s blooms on this year’s growth, so they should only be pruned right after blooming.
Just about everybody has grown up with Lilacs. They have been around for years. Lilacs are long-lived bushes that can be cut down and regrown from the base.
New trunks grow every year, forming quite a colony. The older, larger trunks should be removed occasionally. Smaller sucker growth should also be removed to allow for good airflow.
Bush Lilacs
Unlike their tall and suckering relatives, bush lilacs only grow to be about 6 feet in size. They also grow in a multi-branched bush shape. They are good for limited spaces and hedges.
While most of the taller Lilacs are French hybrids, these are oriental in heritage. They come from the Far East originally, like many of the landscape plants we grow nowadays. Don’t worry, they are still very fragrant when they bloom.
